Rooted in the Landscape
This project is my own personal exploration of race, belonging, nature and place.
I am drawn to colour, texture and pattern in the natural world that surrounds us. Through this constant practice of appreciation of the natural world, I have learned to love parts of myself that I was earlier critical of, and to see myself as an extension of these spaces, rather than a visitor in them. These photographs are a documentation of my personal journey of learning to love the colours textures and shapes of my own body, through appreciation and awe for the Earth as a whole.
The images in this series are in pairs, intended to be viewed along side one another.
The images of the body are in black and white because for me, the thought of skin colour and their differences fall away when I’m in nature. When we’re outside it doesn’t matter what the colour of our skin is because all the colours and variations exist. Everyone belongs.
The images of nature in this project intentionally focus on elements like rocks and tree bark, rather than flowers and leaves that are more conventionally beautiful, to invite the viewer to broaden their view of what is beautiful.
This project is ongoing.
